History creates trust in our teams, or the lack thereof

When the Cavaliers make a move that we don’t understand and/or agree with, we are compelled to give them the benefit of the doubt because most of the things they do work out as planned.

They have earned our trust.

Ditto for the Guardians and the Ohio State football team.

We follow the path of history, as it leads us to the truth of the future.

Yes, history tells us so.

And if you don’t learn the lessons of history when it comes to things that don’t work, then you are doomed to repeat them.

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam has entrusted General Manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski to find the team’s bridge quarterback via free agency and the presumptive franchise quarterback via the NFL Draft.

History tells us that things won’t turns out well in that effort. It is the history of not just the Deshaun Watson situation, arguably the biggest botched move in the history of pro football, but also the miscalculations regarding Baker Mayfield, Joe Flacco and even Jameis Winston. Yes, Jameis Winston. He set the franchise record for passing yards last season, but he was plagued with interception problems. If Stefanski really is “the quarterback whisperer,” as he is reputed to be, then he should be able to coach Winston out of the bad stuff, which would have given the Browns a dynamite passer.

I hope — we all hope, and pray — that, at long last, Stefanski and Berry get the quarterback situation figured out, for no franchise can be successful with problems at the most important position in team sports.

But do I think they will?

History tells us all the answer, sadly so.
