I love Herm Edwards.
I really do.
And it’s more than just the fact he’s my age.
Old guys are smart. They boil away all the superfluous and are left with the good stuff.
It’s called the truth, reality, the way it is, facts, undeniable reasoning.
Herm has always so famously said, “You play to win the game.”
You don’t play to have more total yards.
Or to get more sacks.
Or to have the ball a lot.
None of that matters,
At all.
Ever.
No, you play end the game with more points than the other team.
Period.
End of statement.
End of conversation.
End of argument.
That’s why there is no category for any of those things — and many others — in the standings.
The only thing they keep track of is whether or not you win the game.
That’s why — let’s hear it, Herm — you play the game.
The only reason.
The Browns lost their game on Sunday, 17-16, to the Cincinnati Bengals at Huntington Bank Field in the regular-season opener.
They lost because they messed up in kicking field goals and extra points, and also because they bobbled passes so badly that the other team caught the ball for an interception.
Otherwise, the Browns played pretty well. Yup, they did everything but win the game.
For goodness sakes, ladies and gentlemen, that’s not a badge of honor. It’s not something of which to be proud.
It’s a condemnation of everybody and everything in the organization, on this day and every other day in which the Browns played well enough to win but didn’t — they did everything but win.
Everything includes winning.
It’s why you play the game.
Losing teams consume themselves with woulda, coulda and shoulda.
The Browns will win when they focus on . . . winning, and absolutely nothing else.
Until then, they won’t win.
Herm Edwards tells us so.
Can someone in Berea please listen to him?
