Just think if the Haslams – Jimmy and Dee – get this Browns ownership right, which will happen only, in the opinion of their fans and the media, if the team starts winning big.

They would be canonized in this town.

But while we’re waiting for that to happen – and let’s hope and pray that it does indeed occur — we need to keep in mind that the Haslams have already done a great job, and then some, with their off-the-field work, especially their community involvement in terms of their philanthropy.

Right from the get-go back in 2012 when they brought the Browns, the Haslams got behind a number of local charitable efforts not just with their voices but more importantly with their checkbook. They have given, given and given some more, but way too few have noticed it – or at least given them the proper credit for it – because it was all being overshadowed by the fact that they were messing up so badly with their tremendously more visible on-field performance.

Another example of getting it right in the off-the-field stuff is expected to be with the new uniforms, which will be unveiled Wednesday. They are rumored to have a distinct old-school look to them, which is what the fans have desperately wanted all along instead of those ugly, embarrassing duds that were ushered in, in 2015.

But before it even happens, they’ve already made the unveiling better – much, much better — by promising to take 100 percent of the net proceeds of the sale of the new jerseys to benefit the battle against the coronavirus.

Other teams, such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons, did not do this when they unveiled their new uniforms recently.

But the Browns were smart enough – and the Haslams were philanthropic enough – to not just come with the idea but, more critically, follow through on it. It will be a win-win, with a bunch of money being thrown at the coronavirus fight and admiring as the Haslams gift new uniforms for the area.

What could be better?

So, again, just as I advocated in my last post, let’s give credit where credit is due, to the Haslams for that wonderful gesture.

And if the team gets good, then it will be even more wonderful and the credit to the owners will come rolling in tenfold.

We can only hope.
