Hardly news, just a heartfelt goodbye

Some people may consider it to be news, after General Manager Andrew Berry delivered his end-of-the-year (now virtual) press conference on Tuesday, that the Browns will almost certainly part ways with wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

Ladies and gentlemen, with all due respect, that is hardly a newsflash, breaking news or even any kind of news at all, except for old news.

That — the parting of the two sides this offseason — was apparent months ago, long before Landry, who is much closer to the end of his fine career than he is to the beginning, had finished struggling through an injury-plagued 2021 season.

He is expensive on the salary cap, and he will — or would, if he stayed, which, again, he won’t — become more so. That, plus the injuries and the age, make him a no-no for Berry and the Browns as they look to add younger players who have most, if not all, of their pro careers ahead of them.

Indeed, the Browns will be exceedingly picky as they move through the offseason when it comes to keeping older players like Landry around. The one exception may be defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, but not even that is a great possibility. The process will have to play out.

But with all that having been said, the Browns owe a debt of thanks to Landry for the time he spent in Cleveland. He played hard and tough, he was productive — he led the Browns in receptions this season despite the injuries — and he was a tremendous leader, the likes of which the young club has needed.

The Browns can only hope their core of young players acquire some of Jarvis Landry’s traits. For if they do, then this team has a much better chance to be special over the next three to five years.
