Note: Hard Knocks has plenty not to like was originally published May 19, 2018
The biggest problem I have with the Browns being on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” program during training camp is that they don’t have time for anything other than simply focusing on getting better and preparing for the season.
But there’s something else that tells me that this is a bad idea. It’s something that no one else is talking about. They may be thinking about it – I don’t know – but they’re definitely not talking about it, at least publicly.
- “Roger Goodell informs the Browns and all NFL teams they must conduct the NFL draft remotely” (cleveland.com)
- Bobby Mitchell was legendary (Browns Daily Dose)
- “No remote meetings yet, as start of offseason program delayed” (BrownsZone)
- “Browns banking one-year deals will pay off for defense, now and later” (ESPN)
- “Browns’ Joe Thomas and Alex Mack named to 2010s NFL All-Decade Team” (WKYC)
- Myles Garrett working out
- “Ohio governor on NFL football by September: ‘I just don’t know’” (PFT)
The dynamics between head coach Hue Jackson and new offensive coordinator Todd Haley may not be the greatest. New General Manager John Dorsey brought Haley in to run the offense, and also to take over the head-coaching job if Jackson fails. Jackson knows it. Haley knows it. It’s not a secret, really. Dorsey has a relationship with Haley. But he came to Cleveland now knowing much at all about Jackson.
So Haley is Dorsey’s guy. Jackson is owner Jimmy Haslam’s guy. Jackson would not be the coach if Dorsey had his way. But when the owner wants something, such as he wants Jackson to have a chance to coach the team with a GM who actually knows what he’s doing, you do what he owner says. You let his idea carry out to its natural end.
As such, I wonder if all that will play out on “Hard Knocks” so that it’s unmistakable to everyone, and if it does, then what happens? Does it make Haley look bad, like he’s just sitting in wait for the job t o open up? Does it make Jackson look foolish – a figure to be pitied? And does it make Dorsey look like he’s just biding his time until the inevitable happen?
The Browns can’t afford any of that to happen. But if that emotion – those emotions – are there, then the cameras and microphones will bring that out.
That’s all the Browns need. But it’s what they could get.
