MY GUY DOESN’T AGREE ON GAROPPOLO

As you already know from visiting brownsdailydose.com recntly, I don’t think the Browns should go after New England quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in a trade – that is, if he indeed becomes available, which I sense he would if the price is right in terms of NFL Draft choices for Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

But I know there are differing opinions. There are always differing opinions, no matter what the subject.

One such differing opinion comes from someone who should know. I’m not going to reveal his name, but he knows the Browns from having watched them for a long, long time, he knows football in having played it at a high level and he’s extremely connected to Mentor High School. So he’s more than qualified to discuss the Browns’ quarterback situation.

And when he does, he holds nothing back. He’s firm in, and direct with, his views, so much so that in about only two minutes, he laid out for me what he would do if he were running the Browns, and more importantly what they should do as they try desperately to find their quarterback and thus solve a problem that has plagued the team for going on 24 years.

What about trading for Garoppolo? My guy would do it in a heartbeat, and would be willing to give up as much as is needed, though he doesn’t think the price would be as steep as many people think.

What about the connection to Matt Cassel, a former Patriots backup quarterback to Tom Brady who was once also highly thought of before he failed miserably?

To my guy, there is no connection. Cassel was never a good quarterback, but rather a product of the fine-tuned New England system. Garoppolo came to the Patriots with a much higher pedigree and is a good quarterback, in New England or elsewhere. He can really a difference as a starter, especially to a quarterback-starved team such as the Browns.

Would my guy draft Mentor High and North Carolina product Mitch Trubisky? No. He’s too short and doesn’t have an AFC North body. If the Browns are going to draft a quarterback, then they should pick either Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer or Texas Tech’s Pat Mahomes because they do have AFC North bodies.

But my guy hopes it doesn’t come to that. He hopes the Browns do what it takes to get Garoppolo, because he fully understands the importance of having a great quarterback if the Browns are ever going to get out of the muck and return to their long-ago glory of the years when they did have a great quarterback in Bernie Kosar.
