GROUNDHOG DAY, MOVIES AND THE BROWNS
By STEVE KING
Tuesday is Groundhog Day, which, for a good number of people, will mean watching the movie of the same name.
After all, what a great way to celebrate, right?
The 1993 film stars Bill Murray as a Pittsburgh TV weatherman whose life is a mess, so much so that he gets stuck in a situation where he can’t advance to the next day until he gets the present day right. Over and over and over again, he tries, only to fall into the same bad habits to keep himself in neutral. Finally, he straightens his life out and moves on to the next day, which enables him to win the heart of co-star Andie MacDowell, who works with him at the TV station,
It’s a comedy, yes, but it also points out a good life lesson that we’ve learned during this COVID-19 pandemic in that we have to be willing to change, and adapt, in order to move forward, not just now but for the rest of our existence..
That is also the story of the expansion Browns, if you really think about it. After almost two decades of doing it one way, and doing it wrong each time and thus not being to get out of the mud and become a winner, they finally figured it out this season. It took finding the right head coach, general manager and quarterback, adopting analytics and formulating a plan and sticking to it, even in the tough times.
As such, it feels great for the Browns, at long last, to be one of the haves, and have their house in order, instead of being one of the have-nots and trying to figure out how to get it right. That’s especially true concerning the quarterback. They have their man in Baker Mayfield, so they can sit back and watch all these other teams jockeying for position to get their guy.
