Greatness abounds as Chiefs rally

The Kansas City Chiefs trailed the Philadelphia Eagles 24-14 at halftime in Super Bowl 57 on Sunday night, and look bad doing it.

The lead may have been just 10 points, but it seemed a lot more than that. The Eagles were controlling the game, and the Chiefs were showing no ability to stop them.

But when you have the best quarterback in the game in Patrick Mahomes, and the best head coach in the game in Andy Reid, there is always hope, and it is hope justified. At halftime, the Chiefs made all the right adjustments, both schematically and emotionally, and Mahomes went to work,,showing why he is the best quarterback in the game, and one of the best in history.

The Chiefs scored on every one of their possessions in the second half, including getting the game-winning field gold with just four seconds left to beat the Eagles 38 -35.

The Eagles were outstanding, too, but on this night, they fell just short. Jalen Hurts is a tremendous quarterback, and he showed it. Nick Sirianni, the former Mount Union wide receiver, is a tremendous head coach, and he showed it. That both men are just starting their NFL careers lead you to believe that they have greatness in them, too.

But Mahomes and Reid were already there — that is, in the hall of greatness — going into the game, and they still solidified their standing without any question.

The most important position in team sports is quarterback, and the most important relationship is between the quarterback and the head coach. When you have the best quarterback in the game, and the best head coach in the game, great things happen. And we all saw that on the sport’s biggest stage.

As for the Browns, they have a long way to go. They believe they have their quarterback in Deshaun Watson, and that may well be the case. But they have to do a better job on offense, defense and special teams, for we all saw what special teams did in the game on Sunday. That punt return was the play of the game.

Kansas City, with its young quarterback and young core of players, isn’t going away, and neither are the Cincinnati Bengals, who also have a young quarterback and a young core of players. The Browns can’t whine about that. They just have to find a way to close the gap and get to where they want to go.

It’s time for them to go to work. Next season started as soon as the season ended for them about a month ago.
