SILENCE IS GOLDEN WHEN IT COMES TO JIMMY HASLAM

By STEVE KING

Can you hear it?

Can you hear him?

No, and no. You can’t. You really can’t.

And that’s a good thing — no, make that a great, great thing – for him, you, me and, most importantly, the Browns.

So, perhaps – hopefully – Browns owner Jimmy Haslam has learned his lesson. That could explain why we’ve heard nothing – nothing, absolutely nothing – from him for several months now, and counting.

Again, we can only hope.

Every time Haslam opens his mouth – about football, that is – he says something stupid, wrong or both.

He doesn’t know – anything – about football, so he should just keep quiet.

All he needs to do is keep signing everyone’s paychecks at Browns Headquarters in Berea and stay out of the way.

He has apparently finally figured out that he has a real good football man in General Manager John Dorsey, and as such he needs to say nothing. Haslam would just muddy up the waters by doing anything but that. History has told us that.

I know it’s the offseason when, because there’s not as much going on, a lot of owners aren’t saying anything – or at least much of anything. When there’s something that needs to be said by the owner of the team and nobody else, they’ll speak up. But until then, they’ll just stay behind the scenes.

I hope Haslam is in that group.

I don’t begrudge him the ability to speak when needed, but when he opens up his mouth when not needed, nothing good ever happens.

I want Dorsey to be the executive and front-office face of the Browns. He knows everything that Haslam knows about the team – and so much more.

When he talks, it provides a window into the team and what the decision-makers are thinking.

They’re thinking that way because Dorsey has shown them evidence of everything he’s told them.

So let Dorsey tell it to the public.

He’s the guy who finally got the Browns their franchise quarterback.

Because of that, I trust him. And you do, too.
