GIVE KIZER A CHANCE — BUT NOT RIGHT AWAY

You The Browns will have a quarterback derby to decide their starter this season.

That’s never a great idea, but that’s what struggling teams do. After all, not having a solid quarterback is why they’re struggling in the first place.

But what would be a worse idea is if the Browns are really serious about giving rookie DeShone Kizer a chance to start.

The worst idea of all, though?

If they go all the way and name Kizer as the starter for the regular-season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Browns selected him in the second round, at No. 52 overall, in the NFL Draft two weeks ago, so as such, Kizer will eventually get his chance to play, and start. That’s no secret to anyone.

But what we’re talking about is giving him the start right from the start. He won’t be ready. None of the quarterbacks in this draft class will be ready to start the season. That’s also not a surprise to anyone. That was determined months ago, and the opinion hasn’t changed.

f any of these quarterbacks start in Week 1, then the deep thinkers on those teams ought to have their heads examined because they aren’t thinking very deeply, or clearly.

That would be the case especially with the Browns, who are coming off an NFL- and franchise-worst 1-15 season. In an effort to keep that from happening again, they’ve rebuilt their offensive line this offseason, signed a starting wide receiver in free agency and drafted their starting tight end.

Those are a lot of pieces parts, so it will take some time for all those parts to come together and work as one. It will also take a veteran quarterback to oversee the process, even if that veteran is second-year pro Cody Kessler, or Brock Osweiler, who is entering his sixth season but was a full-time starter only in 2016.

When you’re pushing for Kessler or Osweiler to be the starter, that’s not exactly a positive.

It’s why the Browns drafted Kizer to be their guy – but not right away, please.
