Get Josh Gordon away from Johnny Manziel ASAP

Nobody told head coach Hue Jackson that it was going to be easy to rebuild the Browns, and he is finding that out.

As Jackson continues to work on the NFL Draft, he has learned that wide receiver Josh Gordon was with quarterback Johnny Manziel at UFC 196 on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Jackson, of course, has already decided to move on from party animal Manziel, and will cut him on Wednesday when free agency officially begins. In fact, Jackson probably has a big calendar somewhere in his office at Browns Headquarters on which he’s been counting down the days until he can rid himself of that walking, talking, never-ending headache.

But Gordon, despite the fact that he, too, has a troubled past and was suspended for all of last season by the NFL for violating its substance abuse policy, is still very much in play for Jackson. The coach is hoping that Gordon, who had a breakout season in 2013 by leading the NFL with a club-record 1,646 yards receiving, will be reinstated by the league in time to play this season. That would be a huge boost for the Browns, who lack a wideout capable of making plays deep down the field.

However, for Gordon to be able to help the Browns, he is going to have to get his life in order, and prove it to the NFL. And he’s obviously not helping himself by hanging around Manziel – in Las Vegas, no less. That’s a disaster waiting to happen. Manziel doesn’t care about himself or his own career, so he sure isn’t going to be concerned about Gordon or his professional well-being.

As such, Jackson and the Browns need to drop everything and do all that they can – all that they’re allowed to do under the league’s rules concerning how much, and what kind of, contact a team can have with a suspended player.

The takeaway from all this? That Manziel, even though he has absolutely no future with the Browns, is somehow still able to affect them in a negative way.

It’s a good that Jackson has no hair, for if he did, he would certainly lose it over this craziness.
