It’s Pittsburgh Week, so it seems fitting, then, that at this same time, we find that former Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens has popped back into the news.
Kitchens, whose one season — 2019 — as head coach of the Browns might be best symbolized by a victory over the Steelers in Cleveland in which defensive end Myles Garrett was involved in an ugly incident with Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Rudolph, was named the interim head coach at North Carolina following the recent firing of head coach Mack Brown. He had served as running game coordinator and tight ends coach for the Tar Herls the last two seasons. He will coach the team for the bowl practices and game.
“Freddie Kitchens is an incredibly talented coach who is respected by our student-athletes and staff,” UNC Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham said.
That’s what former Browns General Manager John Dorsey thought when he hired Kitchens. Perish the thought! They were fired together after that 2019 season.
Let’s hope it works out better this time around for Freddie, and for Bubba as well. Nobody wants to get fired.
Dorsey, by the way, now works as a senior personnel executive for the possibly Super Bowl-bound — for the first time — Detroit Lions. Pretty nice rebound, huh?
