FREDDIE AND BELICHICK IN SAME SITUATION?

By STEVE KING

Freddie Kitchens of the Browns and the New England Patriots’ Bill Belichick are at the opposite ends of the NFL head-coaching spectrum in most respects.

Kitchens is hoping he still has a job when he wakes up each day, and Belichick is likely the greatest head coach in pro football history.

Despite that, there are a few similarities, and it involves the way both are being treated by the national media right now.

In the eyes of many media people, Kitchens is going to be fired. Period.

And in the eyes of many media people, the great run of Belichick, quarterback Tom Brady and the Patriots is about to be over, if it isn’t already.

These guys – and gals – from places like South Dakota, New Mexico and Arkansas have been writing this for years. Every time the Pats slip a bit, the mantra starts that they are toast. You know, if your keep writing something enough times over a long enough period of time, then you’re eventually going to be right.

No dynasty lasts forever. Belichick isn’t going to coach forever, and Brady isn’t going to play forever. But if the people on the inside don’t know when it’s going to be over in New England – and I haven’t seen anything to that end from them – then how in the world are those on the outside – way outside – going to know?

That’s right, they aren’t. They can’t.

As for Kitchens, I’m not sure at all that he will be fired at all. I don’t know. I just talked to someone who knows a lot about the situation, and is very close to the situation, and he doesn’t know, either. He has no idea.

So, then, how is someone three time zones away going to know?

That’s right, they aren’t. They can’t.

So, before we bury Belichick and the Patriots and Freddie, let’s way until there are some real clues, not just speculation. OK? Please?
