Forget the running game and playing defense in favor of passing the ball

Perhaps the Browns stumbled across something today with their improbable 33-30 victory in overtime over the host Baltimore Ravens.

That is, perhaps what they do best is … passing the ball?

Josh McCown threw for 457 yards, a Browns regular-season record. It’s also the third straight game he has passed for over 300 yards, another team mark.

Going into the season, the Browns were going to run the ball, play great defense and special teams and use field-position to beat teams.

But they are horrible defensively. They couldn’t stop the run if their life depended on it.

And their special teams aren’t by any means special, only average at best.

That passing attack, however, has been outstanding. That’s the same passing attack that was supposed to be pathetic.

It’s great that coaches have philosophies and favorite schemes, but you have to coach to your team’s strength. And the Browns’ strength is passing.

General Manager Ray Farmer doesn’t like passing the ball. But he’s got to catch up with the times. This is a passing league now, and whether or not he wants to admit it, the Browns are pretty good at it.

Hopefully head coach Mike Pettine is more forward-thinking.

If so, then the Browns have just gotten a lot better and a lot more watchable, especially offensively, and particularly with the pass.
