Now that the Browns have said they are going forward into the 2022 season with Baker Mayfield as their starter, the people who want to run him out of town are advocating that the team take a quarterback high in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Ugh!
Double-ugh!!
Triple-ugh!!!
In a poor draft for quarterbacks, one in which there are many experts who are suggesting that there may not be any worth taking because they are lacking in a pro skill set, why in the world would the Browns — or any other team — select one, especially with an early pick? That would be absolutely irresponsible, a gigantic reach if there ever was one.
The Browns are close to having a complete team, one that, barring the kind of injuries that plagued them a year ago, should be able to play with anyone and seriously compete for a trip to the Super Bowl for the next couple of seasons. They just need to add some wide receivers, an edge rusher, a defensive tackle and depth at offensive tackle. By using their picks wisely, which I expect them to do, they should be able to fill those needs.
Taking a quarterback in the middle of all that — especially with their situation and the lack of prospects — would really mess that up. It would be a disaster.
Let’s do this instead: add pieces around Mayfield, keep him and the rest of the offense healthy and see what happens. And let’s save the Baker bashing for a time down the road when, or if, it’s warranted.
OK?
