Don’t Forget ‘The Assassin’: A Founding Father of the Dawg Pound

The fact the Browns are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Dawg Pound this year is a great thing.

It really, truly is — and that’s an understatement.

It’s a wonderful job by the Browns for doing it, and it’s wonderful for the fans — the best fans in all of pro sports, we need to emphasize — that they will get to experience it. It might be
too much to expect the rebuilding the Browns to have a successful season to make the celebration even more special. The Pound Party may have to carry fans through the fall.

What no one seems to remember is that in addition to The Corner Brothers, cornerbacks Hanford Dixon and Frank Minnifield, linebacker Eddie “The Assasin” Johnson alsohad a big hand in getting the Pound started. The three men were all very close.

In addition, the first vestiges of the Pound actually occurred in the 1984 season, but the fact the Browns got off to such a horrible start en route to a 5-11 finish when they were predicted to win the AFC Central championship, caused the effort to fizzle out. It took the Browns’ big turnaround in 1985, as they captured the division title, to fan the flames for the Pound to become a fan favorite.
