Doing nothing was not an option

“What if it doesn’t work out?”

Can you believe I heard that – and perhaps you also did — from fans and media “experts” after the Browns signed free-agent quarterback Robert Griffin III to a two-year contract earlier today?

What a silly and negative thing to say!

Certainly, there are no guarantees, and it may not work out. That possibility definitely exists. RG III could fall right onto his face. He could flop like a fish. He really could. Who knows? Nobody does.

Here’s a guarantee, though: If the Browns do absolutely nothing about the ridiculously bad quarterback situation they’ve had for a ridiculously long period of time, they will once again have one of the worst records in the NFL in 2016. It’s a fact. You can take it to the bank. You can bet your life on it.

That the Browns did something – something so bold and out there that it grabbed the attention of everybody in the football world, something so much bolder and more imaginative than the previous regime would have ever dreamed of doing – is reason enough for their fans to stand up and cheer.

Credit this move to head coach Hue Jackson. There’s no doubt he drove the decision to do this. He convinced the people at Browns Headquarters that this was the way to go. Why? Because Jackson felt confident in his ability to get RG III back on track. Indeed, this is his baby. He’s putting it squarely onto his shoulders.

We keep saying this – and we will continue to say it because it it’s true – but Jackson knows all too well that until the Browns get their quarterback situation straightened around, they have no chance to be relevant, let alone being a contender.

The Browns took a step – a big one at that — in the right direction on Thursday by merely addressing the situation in a major way, and we’ll say how it goes from here.

But just think about this before you leave and go do something else: What if it does work out? That chance certainly exists, too, you know, just as much as already throwing in the towel, which a lot of people were rushing to do today for whatever reason.
