LeBron James is a football fan.
He’s also a smart guy.
And a perceptive one.
A very perceptive one, in fact.
Understanding that, then, he said something recently that, while not intended, perhaps can be applied to the Browns and their apparent decision – sort of, anyway – to bring Hue Jackson back as head coach despite his 1-29 record over the last two seasons.
James was asked about the Philadelphia 76ers and their decision to retain head coach Brett Brown while the team was losing – a whole lot, actually, as has been well-documented – with younger players.
“Be patient, man,” James said in speaking to the Philadelphia media. “You just got to be patient. Obviously, you guys have a mantra here of ‘trust the process,’ but it’s patience. You just got to be patient. If you want to build something, if you want to try to build something, you can’t just automatically (think) it’s going to happen overnight. Like I said, the organization has done a great job of believing in Brett Brown’s system, believing in what he wanted to do and they gave him some time.
“Sometimes, a lot of teams, a lot of organizations in all sports kind of give up on a system, give up on a guy very fast and don’t allow him to implement and get players. You got to have players, too, and now he has some. The last couple years, he continued to build the players, the personnel and things that fit what he wants to do and they’re playing good ball.”
Does Hue Jackson deserve that same kind of opportunity? Does he deserve a chance to continue the process of building a young team and letting it develop – letting those players learn on the job – as the losses mount, mount and then mount some more?
That’s really the biggest question with Jackson, isn’t it?
So, did LeBron answer it?
We’ll see.
