Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, already well aware that he has a reputation of being a man with no patience, did not want to “blow this thing up,” as he put it at the start of training camp, and fire head coach Mike Pettine and General Manager Ray Farmer.
But he did so anyway a week ago. He had no choice, really. A 3-13 finish and all kinds of gross errors in player procurement were all just too incriminating.
With all the firings and hirings, though, one prominent name has not been mentioned, that of Alec Scheiner, who just completed his third year as Browns president. That silence was deafening.
Does that bode well for Scheiner, following the old saying of “no news is good news?”
Or is it a death knell, as in “out of sight, out of mind?”
That’s hard to say. It would not be surprising if he stays, or of he goes. That’s how volatile and unpredictable the Browns organization has been under Haslam.
One thing to keep in mind is that Scheiner was in charge of the two-year, complete renovation of FirstEnergy Stadium, and also of the extensive makeover of the uniforms, both of which are now done. With that, then, has Scheiner outlived his usefulness to Haslam, or does he have more things for his president to do?
Who knows? But plans for the 2016 season are already well underway, so if Haslam were inclined to make a change, then it makes sense that he would do it sooner rather than later.
Stay tuned.
