Deshaun Watson needs this season

Quarterback Deshaun Watson missed all of 2021 with the Houston Texans.

What if, when his suspension from the NFL is determined for good, he ends up missing all of 2022 with the Browns?

He may never recover from it.

That’s according to former Browns scout Mike Tannenbaum, now an NFL insider for ESPN. He wasn’t speaking specifically about Watson when he said it, but he said the other day on the radio that any player who misses two consecutive seasons seldom is able to come back and be productive.

Watson has been practicing in training camp for the Browns, and while practice is important, it is hardly equivalent to playing in the regular season.

We’ll see how all of this plays out for Deshaun Watson, but again, those who think he will be lights out from the start when he finally does see the field in the regular season aren’t being realistic.

And if he misses two seasons in a row, then they will be even more unrealistic.

Browns Training Camp Notes, Aug. 9, 2022 – Provided by the Browns Media Center

  • The Browns made the following roster moves:
    • Signed LB Jordan Kunaszyk.
      • Kunaszyk (6-3, 230) is a fourth-year player out of California. He was originally signed by the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and spent his rookie campaign with the club before serving the past two seasons with the Washington Commanders (2020-21). Over the course of his career, he has appeared in 26 games and totaled four tackles. Kunaszyk is a native of Sacramento, Calif. and will wear No. 51.
    • Waived LB Silas Kelly with an injury designation.
  • The following players did not practice today due to injury: DT Sheldon Day (back), CB Shaun Jolly (groin), CB Denzel Ward (foot) and WR Michael Woods II (hamstring).
  • WR Jakeem Grant Sr. left today’s practice with an Achilles injury.
    • Kevin Stefanski on Jakeem Grant:
      • “I really feel awful for Jakeem. We’ve witnessed how hard the young man has worked since he got to our team. We all realize injuries are a part of our game but that doesn’t make it any easier to accept especially for someone that works as hard and carries himself like Jakeem.”
  • A total of 46 puppies have been adopted this year at the Browns Puppy Pound, presented by Sugardale. Since the program’s launch in 2015, 671 puppies from the Northeast Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) have been adopted by Browns fans at training camp practices. The Northeast Ohio SPCA is a non-profit no-kill pet shelter located in Parma. For more information on the Northeast Ohio SPCA (9555 Brookpark Road, Parma, OH 44129), visit the organization’s website.
  • As part of the Browns celebration of and commitment to youth and high school football, Browns Give Back hosted its Play! Football Day, welcoming more than 300 athletes as special guests during training camp practice.
  • At practice today fans enjoyed free hot dogs from the Sugardale Hotdog Truck and Trailer.
  • During open sessions of Browns training camp, all Browns fans in attendance can visit the Alumni Autograph Stage, presented by Keep It Fun Ohio, to collect an autograph of one of their favorite past players from 1-2:30 p.m. Today’s esteemed guest was Browns Legend Greg Pruitt.
