Delusional or Desperate? Kenny Atkinson’s Comments Were Stunning

Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson is a great guy.

I like him a lot. I really do.

But he is either delusional or scared to death of losing his job, or both.

Ahead of his team’s Memorial Day evening Game 4 against the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals at Rocket Arena, a best-of-seven series in which the Cavs trailed 3-0, Atkinson said, “Analytically, we’ve won two out of three. We’ve two out of the three in the expected score.”

As a Cavs fan who deals in reality, as tough as it may be at times, I was embarrassed to read that, hear that. I was embarrassed for Atkinson and his assistant coaches, the players, the team overall, the franchise and all of Cavs Nation.

That is so crazy — so out there — that it doesn’t deserve a response. A reaction, perhaps, but not a response. There’s a difference.

Anyway, reading his quotes reminded me of former Browns head coach Butch Davis after the Baltimore Ravens’ Jamal Lewis ran for a then-NFL-record 295 yards, amassed via a number of long gainers, against his club.

Afterward, Davis said the Browns did a real good job of stopping Lewis, except for all of those long runs that he had.

All of us in the media kind of looked at each other and thought, “What?”

I wonder if Cavs owner Dan Gilbert is having the same reaction to what his head coach said. I also wonder if Atkinson will have that job much longer.
