DEC. 27 IS SPECIAL DAY FOR THE BROWNS

Sunday is already a special day indeed for the Browns historically, and possibly also could be again in the here and now.

It was 56 years ago, on Dec. 27, 1964, that the Browns notched one of their biggest and most memorable victories ever, winning their last NFL championship by blowing out the heavily-favored Baltimore Colts 27-0 at Cleveland Stadium.

It is the greatest overall team performance in Browns history, with every player checking his ego at the door, doing what was necessary – whatever what it was – in order for the team to dominate a team that was filled with Pro Football Hall of Famers.

Beating the Colts that day, along with edging the Los Angeles Rams to win the NFL championship in 1950, their first year in the league, and rallying from 10 points down with four minutes left in regulation to defeat the New York Jets 23-20 in double-overtime in the 1986 AFC divisional playoffs rank as the three most epic triumphs the Browns have ever had.

And now here the Browns are, poised to do something extraordinary once more, this time in the modern era, as they prepare to play the Jets at MetLife Stadium. It is the Browns’ second trip to MetLife in two weeks, as last Sunday night they beat down the New York Giants 20-6.

By defeating the woebegone Jets (1-13), the Browns (10-4) would take another huge step toward securing their first AFC playoff spot in 18 years in this nightmarish expansion era. In fact, by the time you read this, they may have already clinched a berth.

Regardless, the Browns just want to keep winning, for if they do that, then they will get to the postseason. In addition, they want to keep the momentum going. They are 5-1 since they observed their bye in the middle of the season.

But the Browns have to be careful, for while they are expected to win Sunday, it’s important to note that the Jets came out of nowhere to stun the Los Angeles Rams on the road last Sunday. The Browns don’t want to have the same thing happen to them, so they must keep their focus and attention to detail.

And if they do, then this Dec. 27 will be special – again.
