Charles Woodson a Welcome Addition

If I were Browns General Manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski, then I would be concerned with the addition of Charles Woodson to the team.

Not “sweating bullets” concerned, but rather just “keeping an eye on it” concerned.

Woodson, the product of Fremont Ross High School who went on to Michigan and did the near-impossible by winning the Heisman Trophy as a defensive player (safety), and then fashioned a Pro Football Hall of Fame career with the Green Bay Packers and the now Las Vegas Raiders,  is buying a small stake of the Browns from owner Jimmy Haslam. The two reportedly have really hit it off since they met.

Now, the question is if Woodson will have simply a financial investment in the team, or if he will also be utilized as the Raiders use minority owner Tom Brady and let him have a say on the football side of the organization as well.

Woodson really knows football. As a Super Bowl champion, he knows what works, and doesn’t work, in making a team successful. If Haslam chooses to give Woodson a “football” voice, and I would not be at all surprised if he did, then Woodson could well say some things about the club that Haslam’s two generals would not want to hear. Berry and Stefanski are in their sixth year of running the football operations, and that tenure has produced mediocre results, at best. The owner, who is trying to build a domed stadium and needs the Browns to win to help support that effort, might be becoming antsy. I, for one, would heartily welcome Woodson’s football side involvement. This Berry-Stefanski thing just isn’t cutting it.

It will be interesting to watch it all play out.
