“40 Years Later: Will the Dawgs Still Bite in a Dome?”

Would you like one with more humor, nostalgia, or edge?

The Browns like the Dawg Pound.

They always have, whether it be the original franchise or the expansion era one.

That’s why the current Browns are only too happy to have a season-long celebration this fall commemorating the 40th anniversary of a phenomenon that began almost accidentally way back in 1985. It should be a lot of fun indeed, and, in fact, with the Browns coming off a 3-14 finish and now in a rebuild, whether they want to admit it or not, it may be one of the few sources of joy this season.

But as strong of an attraction as the Dawg Pound is, especially for those 50 years and younger, will it — can it — exist in the domed stadium the Browns plan on building?

The Pound, it seems at first glance, is an outdoor stadium thing, with bundled-up fans frothing at the mouth on a cold, gray day as the snow begins to fall.

Inside, there would be no cold, no gray, no snow and thus no need to bundle. Wear a short-sleeve shirt if you like. You can wear nice shoes Bring your coat but just set it on the seat.

Would that really work, though? Would it be fun? Would it be intimidating to opposing offenses playing at that end of the field?

To be sure, can the Dawgs go into that new house without messing up the carpet?

We may get to find out — that is, if the Haslams and their legal people can work their way through all the land mines and get that facility built.

You can bet that Hanford Dixon, Frank Minnifield, Bernie Kosar, Clay Matthews, Webster Slaughter, Reggie Langhorne, Brian Brennan, Earnest Byner, Kevin Mack, Eric Metcalf and the rest of the bunch, including that Baltimore guy, Ozzie Newsome, and also the ghost of Eddie Johnson, will be watching.
