A good hire in Callie Brownson
By STEVE KING
Chief of staff seems way too important – presidential – of a title for a football team, but, for several different reasons, I am thrilled that Callie Brownson was hired for the job for, and by, new Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski.
Not counting co-owner Dee Haslam, she is the first woman to have not just this type of role, but any type of significant role, really, for the Browns.
I’m all for women getting chances in all fields, including men’s pro sports. It has been way too long in coming. And what better place for this to happen but in Cleveland, which has such a long, rich history of diversity in sports and politics.
That Brownson has this type of job and is in such a big spotlight, she knows she has to perform well not just for herself and her own job security, but also for the advancement of all women and other people who aren’t white men. If she succeeds, then she will open the door even wider for those in that community. And if she doesn’t … well, let’s not talk about that. She is going to succeed.
But while it
is the part of this announcement that, understandably so, everyone is focusing
on, there are other important parts of this.
To have a chance to succeed himself, Stefanski is going to have to surround himself with people with whom he feels comfortable. It’s good to have people who think like you do. Brownson is obviously on that list, and in fact for her to have such a broad-sweeping kind of job, touching so many different parts of the team, Stefanski must have a tremendous comfort level with her.
Analytics. A young head coach. An even younger general manager. And now a woman.
The Browns are blazing new trails, and I, for one, am happy that they are and am excited to see how it all turns out.
