Byner’s late TD run leads Browns past Redskins in 1988

Through a bizarre – and disappointing – series of events, running back Earnest Byner would get traded to the Washington Redskins the following season.

But on this date 27 years ago, on Nov. 27, 1988, he beat the Redskiins.

His 27-yard touchdown run with 1:49 left helped rally the Browns to a 17-13 win over the two defending Super Bowl champions at RFK Stadium.

The Browns, who pushed their record to 8-5, had a 3-0 lead at half in this defensive struggle on Matt Bahr’s 37-yard field goal.

But the Redskins came back to lead 10-3 after three quarters, setting up a wild, back-and-forth finish.

Kevin Mack, who rushed for 116 yards on 22 carries, scored on a one-yard run to tie the game at 10-10.

After the Redskins went back on top 13-10, it was time for the heroics by Byner, who had 44 yards on five carries in the game.

Bernie Kosar was 23 of 36 passing for 219 yards with an interception. Washington’s Mary Rypien, who would later come to the Browns in 1994 and play a key role in their run to a playoff berth, passed for 135 yards and a TD but was picked off twice.

Wide receiver Reggie Langhorne had five receptions for 57 yards, with Byner catching seven passes for 48 yards and wideout Brian Brennan four for 47 yards.

The Browns had toughed one out, and those are often times the most satisfying wins of all.
