Browns will need to be offensive in their head-coaching search

It’s impossible to determine at this point who the next head coach of the Browns will be.

Still, the disaster that has been the short Mike Pettine tenure of just two years has determined – in no uncertain terms – who it should not be.

It should not be a defensive-minded coach. Under any circumstances.

It should be an accomplished, forward-thinking, innovative offensive minded guy – and a strong-willed one at that who can a leader as well.

Pettine’s background is with the defensive side of the ball, and the way he has handled the quarterback situation is ignorant, at best.

Remember Eric Mangini, another defensive guy? Jerome Harrison did a great Jim Brown imitation down the stretch in 2009, but Mangini, for some unknown reason, refused to commit to him as the starter for 2010.

Really?

Romeo Crennel, another defensive guy, is as nice of a man as you’ll ever meet. You can’t help but to love “RAC,” as he is nicknamed. But he said one time that he couldn’t figure out why the media was so interested in the quarterbacks.

 Huh?

See the pattern here?

Having a defensive-minded guy as a head coach is a recipe for disaster. It’s an offensive game now, and has been for years. Defense is merely what goes on when a team’s offense is sitting on the sideline resting.

Tell that to Browns General Manager Ray Farmer, who refuses to draft a wide receiver in the first round under any circumstances.

With Pettine and Farmer teaming together – well, sort of, anyway, in that they absolutely hate each other – it’s amazing the Browns have gotten a first down this season.

Let’s hope that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam figures out this no-brainer fact about offense and having a head coach who understands it. That’s a great place to start the search for Pettine’s replacement.
