It’s here.
Free agency, that is. Now in its 24th year in its present form, it begins at 4 p.m. today.
The Browns need players. That’s hardly news. But don’t expect them to get a lot of help through free agency – at least from other teams.
Instead, look for them to put more effort into trying to re-sign some of their own players, such as center Alex Mack, safety Tashaun Gipson and right tackle Mitchell Schwartz. Whether they’ll have any success or not remains to be seen, but this much is sure: The Browns can’t afford to lose any of the small number of good players they have. That they have plenty of money to spend in free agency at least gives them a puncher’s chance to be able to add help in some way, shape or form.
If Mack leaves, then the Browns will almost certainly sign his replacement in free agency since they have no one on the roster competent enough to take over at that all-important position.
But again, don’t expect the Browns to bring in a lot of new faces. They firmly believe that the best way to build for the long term is through the NFL Draft.
That makes sense. Many times free agents don’t fit with their new teams.
Rookies are cheaper, and you don’t need to de-program them. They come in with a clean slate in the NFL, ready to learn.
Who knows what the Browns – or any of these teams, really – will do in free agency. The landscape is fluid. It’s constantly changing.
Don’t assume anything until it’s officially official.
Asked over a decade and a half ago when he was sure that the team had landed a free agent, Chris Palmer, the head coach of the expansion Browns, said with a smile, “When I see his signature on a contract.”
And not a moment before.
So hold on tightly, for the first few days are always wild before things calm down precipitously.
Just don’t expect the Browns to be a big part of the fray.
