BROWNS TAKING THEIR TIME, WHICH IS A GOOD THING
By STEVE KING
Is new Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski going to do a good job?
Who knows?
Are any of these new NFL head coaches going to amount to anything?
Again, who knows?
The same goes for the Browns’ search for a general manager to pair – and align – with Stefanski. No one knows if that guy will work out, either.
Their track record on hiring head coaches and GMs, especially since Jimmy Haslam bought the team in 2012, hasn’t exactly been sterling, to say the least. In fact, just the opposite is true, as you well know.
So, while Browns fans collectively hold their breath to see if this thing is going to implode – yet again – at some point down the road, there’s something else you also need to consider. It is that as some of the other teams that were looking for head coaches the last several weeks sprinted to get their guy hired – this means you, Carolina Panthers, with your pursuit of Matt Ruhle – the Browns are taking their time. They are really, really, taking their time.
It doesn’t mean that their guys will work out while Ruhle flames out quickly, like a shooting star. It doesn’t mean that at all, because, as I keep saying, there’s no way to tell about any of these guys.
However, it does mean that the Browns’ choices have been well-researched, well-thought-out and analyzed to the nth degree. They went through the process methodically, bit by bit, piece by piece. They didn’t miss a thing.
Because of that, then, the Browns are convinced they have exactly the right man in Stefanski, and they will someday soon be convinced they have exactly the right man in their GM hire.
Now, though, are the Browns smart enough, perceptive enough, skilled enough and savvy enough to know what the heck they are doing? On this, too, who knows? We can only hope.
