The biggest surprise of Browns training camp and the preseason?
As I said in a radio interview with host Sam Bourquin at WDPN/Q92 in Alliance/Canton on Thursday afternoon, it is that former Ohio State standout running back Quinshon Judkins, taken at the top of the second round of the NFL Draft to be Nick Chubb’s successor, is not even signed a week away from the regular-season opener. And also that it’s not because there is a contract squabble necessarily, but because an alleged incident with his girlfriend is still being investigated by the NFL after the case was dropped in the courts. It is tangled up in enough legalese to fill up the Terminal Tower.
Indeed, when, or if, does it ever get cleared up? Who knows?
The Browns drafted Judkins, who appeared in the pre-draft period to have good character, adding more confusion and surprise to the situation, for games like the opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals are not good defensively. The Browns would love to run the ball, shorten the game and limit the opportunities for the prolific Bengals offense. Now they can’t do that, or at least it will be much harder to do it.
No one saw any of this coming, least of all the Browns, yet here it is staring them right in the face.
Whoa!
