Browns’ Quarterback Future Hinges on Right Move

The Browns have problems at quarterback.

That’s problems, as in more than one. To be sure, there are a number of them on a variety of fronts.

And with that, then, they have to handle all of them correctly — make the right choices and decisions — to get this rebuild off and running down the proper path so they can have a legitimate chance to get where they want to go. Indeed, any rebuild doesn’t begin in earnest until the player they believe to be the franchise quarterback is not just secured, but also playing as the starter.

It won’t be easy to do, especially for a football management team in General Manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski that has proven it can screw up this process to a historic extent.

Sure, at some point, and almost certainly this season, the job that is now that of veteran Joe Flacco will be handed over to rookie Dillon Gabriel. That has been a given from the get-go. But when, and for what reason(s)?

When the team is mired in losing and out of contention? Or when Flacco and the offense continues to struggle? Or a combination of both?

Once that move is made, it affects not just the position and the offense, but also the entire team. It will be very hard to go back if Gabriel can’t find his way at first. You don’t want to ruin a young quarterback right off the bat by putting him into an impossible situation. At the same time, though, you don’t want him to rust on the sideline.

You want to strike at just the right moment. But there’s no exact science to it.

Yes, it’s a delicate situation. There is no room for error. Quarterback is the position with the biggest egos, and you can’t damage anyone’s psyche because you want both of these guys to be mentally able to produce if called upon. No matter what, or who, a team has at other positions, you can’t win without a competent, and confident, quarterback.

We’ll know a lot more after Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. This is a story to be continued throughout the season, no matter what happens.
