Browns put on sickening display in big win over Cowboys in 1979

The Dallas Cowboys were having such a hard time against the Browns at Cleveland Stadium 36 years ago today on Monday Night Football that it made them sick – literally and physically.

With Cowboys star wide receiver Drew Pearson being caught on camera vomiting in the end zone after one play, the Browns rolled past the undefeated defending NFC champions 26-7 before a raucous full house of 80,123 on Sept. 24, 1979.

The Browns, who improved to 4-0 for the first time in 16 years, wasted no time in showing they were unbeaten, rolling to a 20-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game on two Brian Sipe touchdown passes, a 23-yarder to wide receiver Dave Logan and a 52-yarder to tight end Ozzie Newsome, and safety Thom Darden’s 39-yard interception return for a score. It was Dallas quarterback Roger Staubach’s first interception in 150 attempts.

The Browns added another TD on Mike Pruitt’s two-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Sipe passed for 239 yards and the two TDs with one interception. As usual, he spread his targets around, with four players having at least 42 yards in receptions in wide receiver Reggie Rucker (57), running back Cleo Miller (55), Newsome (53) and Logan (42).

Staubach threw for 303 yards, but much of that came in mop-up time. Cleveland intercepted him twice. The Browns forced five turnovers in all.

Jerry Sherk, one of the best defensive tackles in the game, recorded three sacks.
