NO, BROWNS OFFICIALS, YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW THE FANS FEEL

Countless times over the years, especially in recent ones as the losing and frustration has piled up, Browns officials – those who caused the losing and frustration to pile up over that time – have assured fans that they understand how much they want to see a winner.

Nothing – and I assure you, nothing – makes me angrier than that when it comes to this football team.

The “assurances” of Browns officials that they really, truly get the passion of the fans and their desire to see the team flourish, is utter hogwash.

No, ladies and gentlemen in Berea, you have absolutely no idea how much the ladies and gentlemen who have rooted fervently for the Browns for decades upon decades dating all the way back to 1946, want to see things change. You couldn’t have any idea. You haven’t been here through the history of this team.

You weren’t here for all the winning and championships of the original franchise back in the day, and how wonderful it made everybody feel. As former Browns head coach Sam Rutigliano, the man who created some of those great times – exceedingly fun times – with the Kardiac Kids 40 years ago, always likes to say, “When times are good, it’s never better anywhere than it is in Cleveland.”

You weren’t here for The Move and didn’t see all the dishonesty and betrayal of it as Art Modell stole something that wasn’t really his and left the best football region in the country without the sport for three years. It was miserable, utterly miserable. It was a nightmare.

You weren’t here to see the way the fans – not the suits, but the fans – fought to get their team back, only to receive a franchise that, with its losing and dysfunction, has trashed the great image of the original franchise.

So, no, you weren’t here for that entire timeline and as such you don’t know at all how people around here feel. Because of that, you make people mad – very, very upset – when you assure them that you do understand their passionate feelings and their hurt.

Please, please, then, quit saying these things. You’re just making things worse, not better.

In fact, more abruptly and pointedly, just shut up and get this team back to its former glory, or at least some semblance of it.

I hope you understand – really, completely understand — that.
