Browns need a better backup plan

By STEVE KING
Who knows how this Deshaun Watson thing is going to play out, right?
Will he be suspended by the NFL? Most likely, but for how long is impossible to determine.
Will something else in this seedy, distasteful situation sideline him? Again, we have no idea.
But this much we do know, and it is that if the quarterback is not able to play for any substantial length of time in the 2022 season, the Browns are going to be in big,big trouble, especially considering that the AFC is so strong, including the North Division in which they reside. The defending AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals will play the Browns twice. Then there are the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.
As we’ve said time and time again, quarterback is the most important position in team sports. If a club has a good quarterback, then it has a good chance. And if it doesn’t, then it doesn’t.
The Browns have one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in Watson, His backups, Jacoby Brissett and new arrival Joshua Dobbs? Uh, not so much.
They are game managers and not playmakers. If you’re waiting for either of them to win the game, then you’re going to be sorely disappointed. You can only hope they don’t lose it.
These guys aren’t nearly as good as Case Keenum, who backed up Baker Mayfield before recently signing with the Buffalo Bills. You could count on Keenum making at least a few plays.
But if Brissett or Dobbs plays, then the Browns defense is going to have to lead the team. It may seem like a good way for the Browns to win in a Watson-less situation, but I am not with seemingly everyone else in believing that this defense is top tier. It just isn’t. I can’t see it. It’s getting better, but it still has a ways to go.
The Browns are trying to position themselves to win now, but it will likely end up as the second straight season without a playoff berth if Wilson is doing more standing in street clothes than playing
OK, Browns smart guys in the front office, if that indeed happens, then what?
