Blame the coaches, not the kid
Since they play the most important position in team sports, you can write about the quarterbacks every day.
And so we will, at least for several days, but probably more, following the Browns 28-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
I am not going to blame Browns quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson for his poor play. He’s a rookie, after all, who was making his first NFL start.
But I am going to blame head coach Kevin Stefanski and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt for what happened.
The fact that starter Deshaun Watson was not able to play because of a shoulder problem, was not a total shock. The injury had been there all week, and he and the Browns were dealing with it.
They had to know that there was at least a decent chance that Watson might not be available. So, then, they should’ve been getting Thompson-Robinson ready to play in the event that he would need to go in there.
But he looked totally unprepared, physically, mentally and emotionally. He is much more talented, and capable, than what he showed on Sunday. Shame on Stefanski’s and Van Pelt for not allowing him to show that.
Perhaps the Browns would’ve lost regardless, but it would not have been by 25 points. That is totally unacceptable, and it’s a dereliction of duty.
