Most of these NFL preseason games are as forgettable as that first date you had back in the seventh grade.
Ugh! What were we thinking?
Just like that date, these games do not count, so you put most of what happened out of your mind and move forward.
What you remember, though, at least for a little while, are the things that caught your eye — the things that made you stop and think for a minute.
And with the Browns’ 21-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium, what was worth recalling were the efforts of quarterback Joshua Dobbs and rookie kicker Cade York in the first half.
Dobbs showed his athleticism, and what he can do in tough situations because of it, and also his quick decision-making ability, when he mishandled a snap near the Philadelphia goal line, then deftly picked it up and ran the short distance into the end zone for the Browns’ first touchdown before the befuddled Eagles could figure out what, exactly, had happened.
A quarterback who can turn trouble into touchdowns will always have a spot on a football roster at any level.
As for York, the guy who was drafted after the Browns conducted a national search to find someone who would finally end the team’s kicking woes following the departure of the iconic Phil Dawson nearly a decade ago, booted a 50-yard field goal into the Dawg Pound in the rain. Everybody knew this kid was going to make it. There was never any doubt whatsoever.
When’s the last time (nearly a decade ago) that you could say that about a Browns kicker?
