The Browns did more than enough on defense to beat the host Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football.
But they didn’t do nearly enough on our fence, and there in lies the reason they lost again on the road to the Steelers, this Time by score of 26–22.
The Browns turned the ball over four times, two of which, an interception on the first play of the game, and then a fumble late in the fourth quarter, were returned for touchdowns.
Their defense got gashed for just one play all night, a 71-yard touchdown pass. Other than that, the guys of coordinator Jim Schwartz were as good as advertised.
Deshaun Watson is being paid a king’s ransom to be the quarterback to get the Browns tough wins within the AFC North on your road, and he didn’t deliver. He was off-target on a number of throws, missing open receivers. He was responsible for both of the defensive touchdowns by Pittsburgh. He he threw high and away to tight end Harrison Bryant, and that ball was returned for a score. And he was strip-sacked on the fumble that was returned for a touchdown.
So, then, the Browns failed to go to 2-0 for the first time in 30 years, and head back home to try to regroup to move forward. It will not be easy, because the biggest loss of all was that of standout running back Nick Chubb, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first half. Without him, the Browns offense did little. Again, Watson should’ve been the difference, but he wasn’t, and the Browns have to go back to the drawing board to figure out why. Yes, it was because in part by the Steelers defense that caused Watson to struggle, but a lot of it was problems he brought on himself.
