Browns just like those long-ago Indians

BROWNS JUST LIKE THOSE LONG-AGO INDIANS

By STEVE KING
Remember when, back in the 1990s, the Indians assembled what amounted to an all-star team?
There were great players at nearly every position, including Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez, Kenny Lofton, Albert Belle, Robbie Alomar, Sandy Alomar Jr. and Omar Vizquel. It was incredible to watch.
Now the Browns are doing the same thing.
The signing of defensive end Jadeveon Clowney simply adds to it, and in many ways might add a few exclamation points!!!
Who would have thought this in 2017 when the Browns were going 0-16 and going nowhere yet again, but this time to new depths?
There’s Clowney.
And, course, Baker Mayfield.
And Myles Garrett.
And Nick Chubb.
And Kareem Hunt.
And Jarvis Landry.
And Odell Beckham Jr.
And Denzel Ward.
And Joel Bitonio.
And J.C. Tretter.
And Jack Conklin.
And on and on it goes,
All his and we’re not yet to the NFL Draft, where the Browns hope to add even more talent.
Like those long-ago Indians, this is indeed incredible to watch, and it will continue to be so. Wait until they start playing games again in the late summer.
But those Indians, as good as they were, and despite the fact they went to the World Series twice in a three-year span, never did win it all, that blown lead in the ninth inning in Game 7 in Miami being the scene that still burns in our memories.
Ditto for all those ultra-talented, full-of-stars Browns teams of the last half of the 1980s. Five straight playoff berths, four Central Division titles and three trips to the AFC Championship Game, but not the ultimate goal.
Ugh once more.
As such, then, it isn’t enough to be really, really good — to have all these great players, to have all these all-stars. While that is impressive and invites a plethora of media coverage, and while the Browns may end up being on national TV more than the nightly network news, it will be just another near-miss unless the team not just gets to the Super Bowl for the first time, but also wins it.
Anything less is unacceptable. It really is. That’s harsh to say, but it’s the truth, and you will always get the truth here.
The Browns need to get the job done. They need to seal the deal.
Can they?
Yes, of course, they’re absolutely capable of it, no question about it.
But will they?
We’ll see.
