Browns get big win on big stage in 1977

Playing on Monday Night Football.

Having the game go to overtime.

Getting a victory.

And making some history.

If you’re a Browns fan, then it doesn’t get much better than that.

And t those circumstances all came together 38 years ago today, on Sept. 26, 1977, before 76,418 fans at Cleveland Stadium and a national TV audience.

Don Cockroft’s 35-yard field capped a second-half comeback and helped the Browns edge the New England Patriots 30-27 in the first overtime game in their history, and just the second in MNF history.

The Browns (2-0) led 7-0 in the first quarter as running back Greg Pruitt, on a halfback-option pass, found fullback Brian Duncan for a five-yard touchdown. But they trailed 17-7 at halftime.

They tied it 17-17 in the third quarter as Brian Sipe threw a 26-yard scoring pass to tight end Gary Parris and Cockroft booted a 37-yard field goal.

Cleveland scored 10 more points in the fourth quarter on Sipe’s eight-yard TD pass to Pruitt and Cockroft’s 37-yard field goal to give them a 27-24 lead, but the Patriots tied it on a field goal in the final seconds of regulation.

That set the stage for Cockroft and the Browns to do something special.

Pruitt had a big game, rushing 26 times for 151 yards, catching four passes for 51 yards and a score and throwing that TD pass.
