Browns doing their due diligence

Before the Browns have a chance to do anything — good, bad or indifferent — with their No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft on April  24, it needs to be said that they appear to be doing a great job with their research, preparation and due diligence.

They look to be leaving no stone unturned. They are making every effort to learn all they can as well as they can in determining who they will select from among a trio of players seemingly made up of Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter and Colorado products Shadeur Sanders, a quarterback, and Travis Hunter, a cornerback and wide receiver.

The Browns could also trade down and accumulate more picks, which is something they’ve done in the past. Hopefully, they don’t do that this time, though, because they could desperately use any of those impact players, all of whom play positions of tremendous need for the team. Indeed, this is an incredibly important draft for a club that finished just 3-14 and has a number of holes to fill.

Now, can the Browns’ top decision-makers, owner Jimmy Haslam, General Manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski, be trusted to take all of what they’ve learned and use it to make a wise choice. History tells us that might not be the case, but Browns fans have no recourse other than to let those men do their job and hope for the best.

However, if things don’t work out, then Berry and Stefanski could lose their jobs. Haslam has indicated Berry needs to “nail it” with the pick.

For everyone involved, let’s hope Berry and the Browns do just that and nobody gets fired.
