Browns Daily Dose with Steve King

Tuesday, Aug. 18 (PM) – In a real sense, getting hurt was the best thing that could have happened to cornerback Justin Gilbert.
But for wide receiver Terrelle Pryor? Uh, not so much.
Gilbert suffered a hip-flexor this evening as the Browns wrapped up their two days of practices against Buffalo at the Bills’ training camp in Rochester, N.Y. It was also learned that Pryor on Monday aggravated the hamstring injury that kept him out for a week.

Gilbert, who had a nightmarish rookie season in 2014 after being the No. 8 overall pick in that year’s NFL Draft, and then performed even worse in camp this year, needs a break. Forget about all the team’s injury problems at cornerback and the need for healthy bodies. No one wants to see Gilbert get hurt, but he needs to get off the field – no matter how that happens – so he can get his mind right again. His confidence is shot. The longer he’s out – as long as it’s not too long – the more he’ll benefit. Really.

On the other hand, Pryor needs to play and learn how to be a wide receiver after having been a quarterback all his life. He has immense talent and the Browns are swinging the door wide open for him to make the team, but all this time in the trainer’s room has stalled his growth. He missed the preseason opener against the Washington Redskins last Thursday night, so everybody was anxious to see him Thursday night when the Browns host these same Bills at FirstEnergy Stadium. That’s likely not going to happen now.
Injuries have been the story of camp thus far for the Browns. Their ability – or inability — to weather these issues will be an even bigger story.
