Browns Daily Dose with Steve King

Monday, Aug. 17 (late AM) – As we said the other day, any news involving the quarterbacks is big news, even if it involves a backup. And so it is with the word that Browns backup quarterback Connor Shaw injured the thumb on his throwing (right) hand in last Thursday night’s 20-17 loss to the Washington Redskins in the preseason opener and will have surgery, which could cause him to miss the rest of the season. This is only semi-major news. Shaw was, depending upon your perspective, only either the third- or fourth-stringer behind starter Josh McCown and second-stringer Johnny Manziel, so this is not a significant loss. However, keep in mind that Cleveland quarterbacks have dropped like flies for every season since the team returned to the field in 1999, and by the end of last year, with both Brian Hoyer and Manziel out with injuries, Shaw was starting. But third-string quarterbacks don’t win games. You can only hope they don’t lose them. The Browns say they will not sign another quarterback while they are in Rochester, N.Y. today and tomorrow to practice against the Buffalo Bills. As such, Thaddeus Lewis, in his second tour of duty with the Browns, is now entrenched as the No. 3 quarterback. For some strange and misleading reason, everybody seemed to be lauding Shaw and dismissing Lewis during camp, but actually, Lewis is – by far – the better quarterback. If the Browns keep three quarterbacks and he makes the team, Lewis is capable enough to go into a game and not lose it for you. He proved that when he acquitted him nicely when he started against the Steelers in Pittsburgh in the 2013 season finale. Still, look for the Browns to bring another quarterback in by the end of the week. As this team knows all too well, you can never have enough quarterbacks. And, of course, in an emergency, former quarterback-turned-wide receiver Terrelle Pryor could go under center with no problem.
