Browns coach Condoleezza Rice sounds interesting. Could it happen?

By STEVE KING

Despite what was reported over the weekend, there was never any way whatsoever – in any universe — that former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was ever going to be considered for the head coaching job of the Browns.

Bank on it. Bet your life on it.

Come on!

First of all, while she is a big football fan and a huge Browns fan – she grew up in Alabama and her father loved the Browns because they were the first team to give opportunities to a lot of African-American players – she’s not a football coach. Women can certainly be football coaches, but she is not among them.

Although, to be fair, there’s the fact she couldn’t have done any worse the previous two seasons than former head coach “Hilarious” Hue Jackson, who guided the Browns to a combined 1-31 record in 2016 and ’17. As if any of us really want it, or need it, we’ll get another look at ol’ Hue, now assistant to the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, who host the Browns on Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium.

But I digress. In addition to not being a football coach, Rice has bigger fish to fry. She is a politician through and through, even when, such as now, she’s not holding an office, and her presence at any public event means something to everybody there. She moves the meter. She is very well-respected.

Although she would never run, she would be a tremendous president. I would vote for her in a heartbeat. She is smart, posed, savvy and clever.

But here’s something to think about: while she’s ‘between” political jobs, I wonder if she would ever consider a front-office job with the Browns, as such as team president or chief executive officer? The Browns have no one with either of those titles in their front office right now.

If she can be the secretary of state for the most powerful country in the history of the world, especially in these troubled modern times, she could certainly add something – actually, a lot of something – to an NFL team that probably could sure use it on the business side.

It’s something to think about, especially in light of the rumors – silly though they may have been, and since squashed like a bug – of Browns coach Condoleezza Rice being a real headline. Perhaps – perhaps – the people behind those rumors simply got the job title wrong.

We’ll see.
