The Browns control the NFL Draft that will take place in about a month.
OK, so the Browns don’t officially control the draft. Tennessee is that team because it has the No. 1 overall pick. But unless something drastic happens, the Titans are going to use it to choose Miami quarterback Cam Ward. He appeared to seal the deal on Monday when he looked almost perfect in his performance in the school’s pro day. He added an extra exclamation point or two or three or four to his effort when, on the final play, one of his receivers took a direct snap in a wildcat formation and lofted a rainbow of a pass into the back right corner of the end zone to Ward, who ran under it and effortlessly caught it. It was as if he were saying to the Titans scouts and coaches in attendance, “If you want to run your version of the ‘Philly Special,’ I can run that, too.”
The more you can do, right?
So, then, in essence, the Browns do control the draft because they have the second choice and no one — not even them right now — has any idea what they will do. The predictions are all over the place, including the Browns trading out of the spot, moving down and getting extra picks and eventually selecting someone they think can fill any of the variety of holes on the team. That’s my guess, in fact.
My fear, though, with the fact that haughty General Manager Andrew Berry is determined to prove that he’s always the smartest guy in the room, is that the Browns will do something and/or pick someone no one saw coming and it will blow up in their faces. Making decisions based on ego and pride — that is, being out of control — is never a smart way to do business, including, and especially, in the NFL Draft.
