Training Camp Chaos: Browns Are Already Behind the Chains
That the NFL preseason opener was held Thursday night when the subs of the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers squared off in the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game at Canton, means that the offseason is in the rear-view mirror and football season is officially here.
Everything that is happening now in NFL training camps, including that of the Browns at team headquarters in Berea, means more. It is the building blocks — the beginning of the journey — to the opening of the regular season in about five weeks.
The Browns already had a rough path ahead of them in starting a total rebuild after last season’s disastrous 3-14 finish, but it has become a little more difficult already with the unfortunate off-the-field transgressions of two picks from the NFL Draft, running back Quinshon Judkins and quarterback Shedeur Sanders, and then the season-ending Achilles tendon injury suffered by cornerback Martin Emerson Jr.
Big things, little things and all kinds of things somewhere in the middle have an effect of how a team performs. Browns teams from the glory days didn’t have all the off-the-field nonsense, and as for injuries, they always had a plan for going forward with a next-man-up philosophy. In 1988, for instance, the Browns watched their starting quarterback go down with injuries five different times but still managed to go 10-6 and make the AFC playoffs as a wild card.
The current team doesn’t have that core strength, so it will be interesting to see what happens. Cross your fingers, say a lot of prayers and hope for the best.
