This is a story I’ve never told publicly.

But, the timing is right to do so now.

Wednesday was the 30th anniversary of the Browns cutting quarterback Bernie Kosar.

It was Nov. 8, 1993 that the Browns very unceremoniously parted ways with one of their best, and most popular, players of all-time. The reason, as provided by both head coach Bill Belichick and team owner Art Modell, was “diminishing skills.”

The person who broke the story, one of the biggest in the history of the team? Me. I was then the Browns beat writer for the Medina Gazette and its sister paper, the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram.

Now, did I do some really clever sleuthing — some tremendous undercover work — to get the story?

No, not at all. Not even close, in fact.

Rather, it was sheer luck. It was through the grace of God working in the person of benevolent Browns Vice President of Media Relations Kevin Byrne.

Huh?

OK, so how, exactly, did all this happen?

To be continued.
