Bill Musgrave a great hire

That Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt has been given the dual role of quarterbacks coach is hardly news.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski is really the offensive coordinator, and now he will also continue to be the quarterbacks coach, even though Van Pelt has those titles. Van Pelt is nothing more than a figurehead and administrative assistant for Stefanski.

But the fact that Bill Musgrave has been brought in as senior offensive assistant is indeed big news, great news.

Musgrave’s will be the older, veteran, accomplished voice that is sorely needed on the Browns offensive staff. He knows Stefanski, and Stefanski knows him from the fact they worked together with the Minnesota Vikings a decade ago. Then a low-level assistant, Stefanski served under Musgrave when he was offensive coordinator.

Musgrave’s will be the sole voice in the offensive room to which Stefanski will listen. He sure as heck will not listen to Van Pelt, since he never has. He’s just there to carry out his Stefanski’s orders.

The Browns have to get this offense right. They have to build a scheme that fits the skill set of quarterback Deshaun Watson, their $230 million man. If they can do it right, then the season has a chance to be special. And if they can’t do it, then the Browns will once again struggle and they’re all going to get fired at the end of the season. It really is that simple.

With Musgrave there, the Browns have a much, much, much better chance of building the proper offense and getting this right.
