It’s great that Browns General Manager Andrew Berry has so much confidence in starting quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Moreover, everyone in the organization, from the very top in all the way down to the very bottom, is enthusiastic about the quarterback and what they think he will be able to do next season and beyond.
And that’s the way it should be. It makes sense. The Browns have invested a king’s ransom of $230 million in Watson, so they have to do absolutely everything under the sun to build him up and support him with their words and deeds to give him the best chance to succeed. Anything else would be irresponsible, both for their own best interests and those of Watson.
But in the next breath, if the Browns are really as serious as they say they are about examining everything and everybody on the team so as to get it to the top of the NFL, then they have to look at Watson in the same way. That is, if he doesn’t produce and it becomes obvious he won’t ever be able to do so in Cleveland, then they need to move on from him and use someone else, hopefully Joe Flacco if they are fortunate enough to be able to retain him, at quarterback. They can’t sabotage the fortunes of the entire team just to keep trying to prove they made the right decision to trade for Watson and re-sign him to that big contract.
Fans want the Browns to win, and they don’t care who is taking snaps from center.
