Monday night is providing the most intrigue in the NFL since a Monday night 5-1/2 decades ago.

That was Monday Night Football.

This is Monday night with Bill.

Yes, absolutely, definitely, without a doubt, the college football head-coaching debut of former Browns head coach Bill Belichick as his North Carolina Tar Heels meet
Texas Christian tonight in the season opener, brings with it the biggest question marks since the debut of Monday Night Football on Sept. 21, 1970 when head coach Blanton Collier’s team defeated the New York Jets 31-21 before a Browns record home crowd of 85,703 at Cleveland Stadium.

Just as that was a historic night, so, too, is this one.

Can the greatest head coach in pro football history win on the college level? Belichick spent 50 years in the NFL but not a single day on a college campus until NC came calling. Does that matter?

On one side of the fence, there is this: “Football is football. He’ll be a huge hit. If he can do it the pros, then he can do it in college. It’s no big deal.”

On the other side, though, the contention is such: “He’s 73 years old, and the structures of the two levels of play are drastically different from one another. It’s apples and oranges. If it were easy, then a lot of pro coaches would have done it already.”

“Perhaps, but this is the GOAT when it comes to coaches. And there is only one GOAT. He is special. He is different. He transcends the roadblocks.”

“Belichick is human. This is not one size fits all.”

Back in the 1970, when, as part of the merger between the NFL and the American Football League that brought with it a multitude of changes, MNF was proposed. Pro football was growing by leaps and bounds, in no small part because of television. It was the perfect sport for the small screen. The forward-thinkers in the NFL thought it could work. If they’re watching at 1 and 4 p.m. on Sundayafternoons, then why not also at 9 p.m. on Sundays?

“Oh, come on, who in the world is going to watch a pro football game on a weekday night? That’s absurd. There’s a reason it has never been done before. It’s a horrible idea.”

That was the opinion of many of the affiliates along the ABC network, which was airing the game. Less than half of them opted to take the contest, choosing instead to air their regular Monday night lineup.

If the truth be told, neither side had any idea what would take place. No one was sure if MNF would be a smash hit or a dud, leaving the NFL and ABC with a white elephant that would last for the remaining 13 weeks of the regular season.

MNF was, of course, an instant sensation. The ratings in the markets showing the game were through the roof. The rest of the affiliates were left scrambling to get on board themselves.

So, what will happen with the Belichick experiment? Will he be a hit, turning around the moribund NC program and sending schools needing coaches into pro circles to scour the landscape? Or will the Tar Heels be left with egg on their face and become the laughingstock of the football world?

No one is sure. But everyone can watch — it’s being televised by ESPN, part of ABC — and the world will watch. Of that you can be certain.
