Beckham’s dad humiliating him
By STEVE KING
Odell Beckham Jr.’s dad is embarrassing him.
Humiliating him.
Making him the butt of jokes from around the country.
Post Game Notes, All-Time Great Wins, a Bit of History and Some Takeaways
To be sure, it’s a bad, bad look that his dad is publicly displaying his support for a video that apparently shows his son, the wayward and soon to be headed elsewhere Browns wide receiver, was open all these times and didn’t get the ball thrown his way by quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Look, it’s understandable that Beckham’s dad loves his son. It’s understandable that he wants the best for him. He’s like most any dad in that respect.
But with the fact that even young kids don’t want their parents, or any family members, publicly criticizing coaches or teammates for doing their loved one an injustice, that it’s involving a high-priced, high-profile pro athlete makes it just that much more absurd, weird, misguided.
If it wasn’t so hurtful to the Browns, causing a Terminal Tower-sized distraction in the days leading up to a make-or-break road game against a tough AFC North opponent in the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, it would be funny, or funnier. It is still funny. If you’re an adult athlete and you need your dad’s help to get to be a bigger part of the offense, you’re not cool. Sorry there, Odell, you’re not cool at all. Have your dad buy an NFL team and you can have the ball all the time. You can rotate and play all the positions on offense — or even defense — in a game, if you like.
I’ve seen a lot of stupid stuff in sports over the years, but this may just be one of the worst in that regard. It is making the Browns look stupid, too. They are guilty by association.
What happens from here is anyone’s guess. The only sure thing is that Odell Beckham is done in Cleveland, for in getting rid of him, they also get rid of his helicopter dad.
Update: Nov. 5, 2021
Statement from Browns EVP of Football Operations and General Manager Andrew Berry on Odell Beckham Jr.
“After careful consideration, internal discussions and conversations with Odell and his representation, we’ve determined that it is in the best interest of all parties involved that Odell no longer play for the Cleveland Browns. We appreciate all his efforts and contributions while in Cleveland, but we’ve just reached a point where it is best that we move forward as a team without Odell. We are finalizing the process of granting Odell his release and we wish him well as he continues his career.”
Browns designate CB M.J. Stewart for return
BEREA, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns have designated CB M.J. Stewart for return from injured reserve. In addition, the team re-signed FB Johnny Stanton IV to the practice squad and placed CB Bryan Mills on practice squad/COVID-19.
Stewart appeared in five games this season as a reserve and recorded seven tackles. He was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury on Oct. 12.
*A player on injured reserve is allowed to return after missing only three games, and teams may return an unlimited number of players from injured reserve throughout the year.
